Capturing the IoT platform revenue opportunity
The IoT platform market has undergone a decade of rapid growth – from the early machine-to-machine days in 2008 to a period of active M&A transactions. 2019 is a pivotal year as market players position for growth through roadmap improvements and ecosystem collaboration. According to GSMA Intelligence, the bulk of global IoT revenue lies in the applications, platforms and services segment.
In this latest GSMA Intelligence report, we define the layers of IoT platform capabilities and outline the required technology components to meet the need to rapidly scale up existing and new IoT deployments. As connectivity management platform capabilities become commoditised and increasingly bundled with an operator’s connectivity services, attention is turning to the other two layers in device management and application enablement platforms. We identified a handful of companies with innovative collaborative approaches, including Vodafone and PTC, Sprint and Ericsson, and ARM. As IoT deployment patterns are different across sectors and regions, there are opportunities for collaboration between mobile operators and platform vendors.
