To date, the rollout of 5G deployments using mmWave spectrum has primarily been targetted at fixed wireless access. mmWave technology requires enormous infrastructure investment because of the very limited coverage of frequencies used. However, the development and use of mmWave spectrum is a critical stepping stone for transforming the 5G ecosystem, in particular by powering enterprise and factory solutions. As such, growing demand – as well as advances in the technology – is likely to come primarily from vertical industries. Operators should act quickly while mmWave technology is still nascent, using this period as an opportunity to explore and narrow down use cases as well as expand expertise.
